The General/Universal History of the Things of New Spain comprises twelve books by the Franciscan Fray Bernardino de Sahagún (*1499 - †1590). After being lost for three centuries, a rediscovered manuscript of this ethnographic research study was named Florentine Codex after its storage in the Biblioteca Medicea Laurenziana in Florence. In the first book, we learn about the Gods of the Mexica, including Quetzalcoatl, Tlaloc, and Huitzilopochtli. It is a description of each god, for example, their personality traits and their specific adornments.

In ancient Greece, calendrical lists of significant weather events are today called "parapegmata" (Graßhoff, Gerd 2017). They are aligned with the seasonal change of the sun's course and correlate the weather events with visible horizon phenomena of the rising and setting stars at dawn and twilight (Taub, Liba 2003). These so-called "heliacal risings and settings" of the brightest stars mark exactly a seasonally fixed day during the year when a particular star becomes visible near the horizon for the first or last time before a time of invisibility due to proximity to the sun. The heliacal rising and setting phenomena marked the seasonal calendars for early cultures.

This data publication is a comprehensive machine readable edition of the content of the main historic parapegmata as JSON files.

**ConicalSundialsMeasurements.json** describes the dimensions of the corpus and cone of ancient conical sundials with 3D-models which are cataloged in the repository of the Berlin Ancient Sundials Project (http://repository.edition-topoi.org/collection/BSDP). The dimensions were measured from the 3D-models in that collection. Besides, the database lists distances and angles of construction points (i.e., the shortest distance between the cone apex and the day curves). They were relevant to validate the geographical location for which the sundial was crafted, and derived values for the ratio between gnomon size and shadow length (g,s).

Ptolemy's catalogue of localities contains a list of places with their coordinates that enables to draw maps of the Iberian Peninsula. Ptolemy's text came down to us in two versions that are sometimes different regarding the spelling of the toponyms and the values of the coordinates. These versions are usually called "Omega recension" and "Xi recension". Based on the Greek text of Ptolemy's catalogue edited by A. Stückelberger and G. Graßhoff (2006), we will draw Ptolemy's map of the Iberian Peninsula and compare the two transmitted versions of his work. This jupyter notebook maps the locations of both recensions.

The data relate to the repository of the Berlin Ancient Sundials Project
(http://repository.edition-topoi.org/collection/BSDP). The data combine the type of decoration with a
corresponding position on the surface of the sundial's corpus, as well as to
make the results searchable and computationally accessible. Due to the different
shapes of the sundials - or "corpus types" - the classification was simplified
ten categories to fit the maximum number of sundials. These are frontUp,
frontLow, front, sides, back, base, intersection, limbus, legs; an additional
section gives details on specific parts of the body, coloration, or finding
context. Only clearly visible decorative elements are recorded. A record
without an entry for an object is not necessarily plain/undecorated but could
have been unable to be assessed due to other reasons, e.g., the lack of image
resources.
