Block modelling is a method for finding groups of units in a network and identifying the connections between them. Thus, amongst other things, it provides insights into the global structure of the network by determining approximately equivalent clusters of units. This decomposition of a set of nodes/units of a network such that the corresponding model (the small network obtained by reducing all the decomposition groups) describes the structure of the underlying network/

The most recent sub-fields within blockmodeling are the analysis of multilevel networks (focusing on the connection within and between levels at the same time) and the study of temporal networks (which are snapshots of relations at different points in time).
