The International Research Group on Security and Safety Policies primarily focuses on building common wisdom on the evaluation of safety and security policies from the socio-economics viewpoint. The risks addressed encompass for example occupational and road safety, natural risk, cybersecurity.

The group was launched on the basis of two evidences coming from the research work:

  • literature on the socio-economic evaluation of security policies is scarce and fragmented, often occupying an ancillary position respect to technical literature;

  • although the different fields and types of risks have specific features, which cannot be neglected, there are several common challenges in socio-economic evaluation.

The intuition is that a common inductive work, drawing from the respective research experience of the members, will reinforce the methodological approaches and widen the toolkit in the different fields.

Our effort ranges from conceptual work such as the concept and classification of risks, to applied transversal evaluation approaches in occupational, energy, cyber, road and infrastructure, natural disaster and so on.

This interdisciplinary approach allows the use of different methodologies, either qualitative, quantitative, or mixed methods. Since the establishment in 2022, our group regularly presents our works at local and international conferences, as well as organizing scientific seminars to discuss the theoretical background, applied studies, and policy evaluation. These attract and  involve researchers, field specialists, and the public .
